“The Open Door: Tradition Meets Transformation”
By Greg Cannon, Founder – AG Associates
Honoring Tradition While Embracing Change
The new year brings opportunity—and in funeral service, opportunity begins with open doors. Our profession stands between legacy and innovation, and the choices we make now will determine how we’re remembered. Families today want something deeply personal. They aren’t rejecting tradition—they’re rejecting what feels impersonal or outdated. In Breaking the Silence: Chapter 1 – The Open Door, I share the story of Tony Martinelli, who once said, “This isn’t how we do things.” But his daughter reminded him, “They’re not rejecting what we do. They’re rejecting what they think we do.” That conversation transformed his funeral home—and it transformed mine.
Leadership in Action
Ask one family this month what a meaningful service looks like to them. Listen without assuming. Your role isn’t to sell traditions to guide families toward meaning. Every question you ask opens a door to connection, trust, and innovation.
Reflection Prompt
Where in your business have you confused tradition with routine? How can you breathe new life into long-standing practices while staying true to your values?
